We had a wonderful time in Samosir Island.

It is easy and inexpensive to hire a motor bike to get around the island which is far larger than we expected.

Road conditions are far from ideal with potholes aplenty. Places is good for sightseeing and water activities plus a little bit of local cultures through the tiny streets. Possibly a good place for travellers looking for an adventure and activities such ask trekking. Many hotels/resorts will put Samosir Island on their website or description but do check the actual location. To drive around Lake Toba takes about a day of driving so if you are located off where you want to be, it can easily mean a 1 to 2 hours drive to get to places. It was said that because of the volcanic soil, anything planted grows very well. So do try the local produce which are often organic and tasty.

One road across the centre is extremely bad n should not be used.

Best place to see this is the main market in Ganurung sp?)a US$1 becak ride from the Saulina Hotel. You will see pigs, wild boars and chickens slaughtered in the market for sale, ladies in their native garb chewing betelnuts balancing a 20 lb bag of rice on their heads bargaining with the street vendors, etc. I suggest you plan your transport to Lake Toba very carefully. Do not take the regular taxis unless you have a stomach for it.

Having said that, it used to practise canabalism in the past. However, if one understand the history of this canabalism, one has nothing to worry about, as they only treat criminal like an animal and eat them. So, if we treat the local with respect, you will be treated with respect too.
